Artist’s Notes:

Baba Shabu studied and worked in many visual arts disciplines including cartography, architecture, and graphic arts among others. In Baba Shabu’s hands the technical symbols used in those disciplines were transformed into beautiful fine arts motifs.

He saw the arcs in the architecture of the Hotel Provident in Monrovia, Liberia and immediately decided to mount an exhibition there focusing on arcs. And so you have the exhibition entitled “Beauty, Balance and Strength of the Arc” in 2016.

The circle, one of his favorite shapes, became the subject of an entire collection: “Segments Inside the Circle” and was part of the Shabu@90 exhibition in 2019.

The main building of our Shabuta Forest Garden is round. The round circle, a symbol of connection, continuity, even protection and safety.

Like the perennial palaver hut, Circles, Round Houses are our beautiful cultural heritage.
